"I shot this work at Dia Beacon in NY. The video depicts me violating the felt of a Joseph Beuys sculpture in the Dia foundation permanent collection. I am interested in the act of institutional transgression as well performing a kind of effeminizing act on Beuys’ Felt stacks and by association on Beuys himself (Beuys being a critic of “Americanization” but also emblematic of masculine rugged individualism.) The video is seen through a navel high “glory hole” in the wall. This forces the viewer to assume a vulnerable position while looking at the work doubly breaking the ‘erectness’ of the body as well as the social ‘erectness’ of high art." NM
