Love Letters (white flag)

39 handkerchiefs embroidered with entries from the journal of Eric Harris

“Eric Harris’ journals chronicling the events leading up to the events of April 20th, 1999 hand embroidered on vintage handkerchiefs. The handkerchief has had a wide variety of allusions but the ones which I am interested in conjuring up with this piece is the use of handkerchief as a white flag of surrender, the hanky code, the use of white handkerchiefs to console or calm nerves (Catholic tradition) and Desdemona’s betrayal of Othello.

This piece is meant to confront mourning as well as critique perpetuation of violence (in sport, video games, pop culture etc.) as the only acceptable medium for homo-social relationships. " NM
